Check out another video to surface from The War on Drug’s upcoming album, Slave Ambient. The video does a fantastic job of capturing the mood and textures of the more organic, layered sound that they first introduced on their Future Weather EP and pervades the new album. You can hear what I mean by streaming the whole album at the Urban Outfitters blog now. I just bought tickets to see them this Fall in San Francisco and am excited to see the new album come to life.

Kurt Vile, Smoke Ring For My Halo

The ever prolific Kurt Vile will return to his solo ways in March with the release of Smoke Ring for My Halo, his second major label full-length. After drooling over a lot of his earlier work, I had a hard time connecting with Childish Prodigy, his first supposed to be breakout record on Matador. Vile tried on a louder, rockier sound and it didn’t quite fit. I have always preferred his slower, quieter moments where he is more laid-back crooner and less hard rocker. “Jesus Fever”, our first listen from Smoke Ring, answers that call. It sounds like he took a few pages from his War On Drugs books, channeling the rustic Fleetwood Mac sound they perfected on “Comin’ Through”. If “Jesus Fever” is an indication of the rest of Smoke Ring, second time may be the charm for Vile and Matador.

Hola Amigos. Greetings from Guatemala! It has been hard to keep up with music news on the road, but new music from The War on Drugs warranted a brief respite. I spent the last year trying to make Kurt Vile’s solo stuff fill the Wagon Wheel sized hole in my heart, but it just has not been cutting it. Finally, The War on Drugs proper have reunited to cut the Future Weather EP, scheduled for release through Secretly Canadian on October 26th. Wade in to the cool, cool waters of their first single “Coming Through” below, it certainly does not disappoint. mp3:The War on Drugs - Comin’ Through
