Justin Vernon

Given its plop time on Friday afternoon, you may have missed Pitchfork’s lengthy interview with Justin Vernon of Bon Iver/Gayngs/Volcano Choir. Here’s what we learned:
- He recorded in Hawaii with Kanye West for his upcoming album: “So I head out there and he plays me the track and it sounds exactly like how you want it to sound: forward moving, interesting, light-hearted, heavy-hearted, fucking incredible sounding jam.“ Kanye is sampling “Woods” and Vernon laid vocals for some ten other tracks while there.
- Rick Ross, as I’ve always imagined, likes to smoke marijuana while making music, sometimes with Justin Vernon: “I was literally in the back room rolling a spliff with Rick Ross talking about what to do on the next part of a song. It was astonishing. Kanye came back and was like, ‘Look at you two guys. This is the craziest studio in the Western world right now!’”
- The new Bon Iver record is around 75% finished, but we shouldn’t expect it for another year or so, and this is just my guess, but if it’s at all similar to For Emma, Forever Ago, I doubt we see it released during the summer months.
- Vernon does not give a fuck: “I didn’t even know that I was supposed to apologize for listening to Bruce Hornsby. It’s dumb to meddle in those kind of questions, like, ‘Is this cool or not?’ I really don’t give a shit about that stuff.”
- He is starting an imprint of Jagjaguwar called Chigliak to release “lost records… totally unsigned shit that never went anywhere but is incredible.”
A busy guy that Justin Vernon. We’re looking forward to all of it.
