Justin Vernon

Given its plop time on Friday afternoon, you may have missed Pitchfork’s lengthy interview with Justin Vernon of Bon Iver/Gayngs/Volcano Choir.  Here’s what we learned:

  1. He recorded in Hawaii with Kanye West for his upcoming album: “So I head out there and he plays me the track and it sounds exactly like how you want it to sound: forward moving, interesting, light-hearted, heavy-hearted, fucking incredible sounding jam.“  Kanye is sampling “Woods” and Vernon laid vocals for some ten other tracks while there.
  2. Rick Ross, as I’ve always imagined, likes to smoke marijuana while making music, sometimes with Justin Vernon: “I was literally in the back room rolling a spliff with Rick Ross talking about what to do on the next part of a song. It was astonishing. Kanye came back and was like, ‘Look at you two guys. This is the craziest studio in the Western world right now!’
  3. The new Bon Iver record is around 75% finished, but we shouldn’t expect it for another year or so, and this is just my guess, but if it’s at all similar to For Emma, Forever Ago, I doubt we see it released during the summer months.
  4. Vernon does not give a fuck: “I didn’t even know that I was supposed to apologize for listening to Bruce Hornsby. It’s dumb to meddle in those kind of questions, like, ‘Is this cool or not?’ I really don’t give a shit about that stuff.
  5. He is starting an imprint of Jagjaguwar called Chigliak to release “lost records… totally unsigned shit that never went anywhere but is incredible.

A busy guy that Justin Vernon.  We’re looking forward to all of it.
