Monsters of Folk

Monsters of Folk is a (it pains me to use this phrase) “super group” that formed a little while back but started to seriously come together during last year’s Newport Folk Festival. The band consists of Conor Oberst (of Bright Eyes), M. Ward (of She and Him and all the rest coming out of Portland), Yim Yames (of My Morning Jacket, formerly known as Jim James) and Mike Mogis (who’s recorded a lot with Oberst and everyone else in the Omaha music scene). The self-titled debut is about as expected, mellow with lots of acoustic guitars and the occasional raucous chorus. I’d be really interested to learn about the division of labor in the group, particularly with regards to songwriting, as they share the vocals and presumably instruments as well. The album in full is streaming at their myspace and Amazon and will be available for purchase September 22nd.
