[Tracks] Monarchy
Things are still unclear about who Monarchy is. Here’s what we know: they’re definitely a duo, they’re definitely from London and their debut single will be released on Neon Gold sometime next month, but that’s the extent of our background knowledge. There have been rumors that Monarchy consists of the alter egos of Milke or a side project for producer Starsmith, but we can neither confirm nor deny either of these guesses.
Sonically, Monarchy is hardly unique. There are plenty of artists out there making dreamy-synth-dance-pop, to varying degrees of success. But there’s one thing separates Monarchy: they’re doing it better than anyone else. Their particular brand of jams is a wonderfully full sound with longing romantic lyrical content. The synth line in “Gold in the Fire” is impossible to not nod your head to; the drums and bass in “Black The Colour of My Heart” are massive; and the backbeat of “The Phoenix Alive” assures it’ll be a staple in DJ sets this winter (for most reading this)/summer (for me). It’s comical that their original tracks all have come out with “(Demo)” as part of the track name. It could be an attempt to temper expectations, but there’s no need for qualifications; all three are fully realized and ready to be jammed out to.
Groups like Monarchy are why we have this blog. This – artists like Monarchy, Ellie Goulding and Samuel and labels like Binary, Neon Gold and HeavyRoc – is where pop music is heading and I couldn’t be more excited to reach the destination.
(Aside: I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the marketing genius behind the group. Their popularity started with megajam “Gold in the Fire,” but since, Monarchy hasn’t tipped their hand on their various social media platforms, nor to Britain’s music journalism megalith NME. Their music is fantastic, but keeping the mystery around the project will only continue to endear the group to music writers.)
