[Music for My Kids] Fat Jon the Ample Soul Physician

It’s time for another installment of Music for My Kids. In case you’ve forgotten, the general premise is that I am at my coolest right now (which still isn’t all that cool) and should pass along some of the albums I loved when I was at my coolest to my kids.

Dearest children,
I’ll keep this one quick, because as one reader pointed out, if I am actually making you guys read this, you probably just want to skip over the words to the music.

Fat Jon the Ample Soul Physician (from now on to be referred to as FJtASP) was a rap producer out of Cincinnati. There’s not all that much known about him; he collaborated with Five Deez and Pase Rock on their records. His solo work was much more interesting, though much of it seems to have started out as bits and pieces of work with collaborators and expanded from there.

Lightweight Heavy has an interesting sound; to my ears, FJtASP was influenced by several of his contemporaries on this record, most notably Rjd2, DJ Shadow and the later evolutions of drum n’ bass at times. Certain tracks are loops of the same 8 bars over and over again, while others rely on the development of the track over time. This is not an album to be put on at a party; it’s much more of a headphones record. If I had to recommend one place to listen to Lightweight Heavy, it would be in the car, towards the end of a long road trip. Music evokes different emotions in all of us, and in spite of the heaviness of certain beats, FJtASP put together a record that captures that longing feeling for me.

See, that wasn’t so bad or long, kids, was it?

With love,

Your father
