Odd Future on Fallon
My feelings on Odd Future can be framed quite simply:
• They terrify me and make me feel old.
• Their talent (particularly that of Tyler, Earl and Hodgy) is undeniable and their willingness to hustle (in the non-selling of crack sense of the word) deserves recognition.
Last night on Jimmy Fallon’s show, Tyler, The Creator and Hodgy Beats put on one of the better performances I can remember seeing on TV. They pulled no punches (save for cutting a curse or two) and weren’t afraid to do their thing, regardless of the venue and backing band. The whole thing is kind of shocking, but in the best possible way. I’m now eagerly awaiting Tyler’s debut record with XL. I’m with Noz, it seems like the “right move.”
A few stray thoughts, with screen shots, after the jump.
1. It must feel kind of terrible to get the call from Fallon’s people saying “We need a woman who looks like a zombie, so we’re asking you.”
2. In some seriousness, if I were Tyler, I’d look into bringing along a tuba player when planning for a big tour. The tuba definitely added something to the “Sandwitches” beat.
3. “Oh, hey there, Travelocity gnome. I had no idea you were into OFWGKTA, but now that I do, it makes so much sense.”
4. I don’t know who Fallon’s guests were, but there was a brief moment of horror as Tyler came over, before they realized they needed to seem game and got into it.
5. Fallon and his bookers deserve some credit for rolling the dice with their musical guests. I’m sure some of it is a desire to seem young and cool, but most producers would never consider having Odd Future on their show.
6. And say what you will about Fallon - it’s certainly all been said before - but this was a great moment.

7. I can’t wait for June, when everyone in Silver Lake and Williamsburg is wearing calf-high striped athletic socks with shorts.
8. Finally, the best news of all is that we can now say “I saw when Mos Def turned into Wooderson.”
