Cities of the Plain

I woke up yesterday covered in flea bites. I was pissed, but that’s just how it goes sometimes when cutting costs on the road.
This morning was a bit different.  In a new, cleaner hostel, I woke up and grabbed my computer to sneak a few moments of music scanning before we got up with the sun and set out to, as our man JE Skeets would put it, “embrace the day.”
After a few days away, my Helvetireader was out of control, so I hit Twitter to see what was “happening.”  One of the great secrets about Twitter is of following DJs late at night and all the great music they post.  Most come home after playing gigs, and if not overly inebriated, link to some interesting music.  (If overly inebriated, their feeds look like Diplo’s.)  I’m an early riser, so during the week in Chile, I’d catch the tail end of DJs hitting the sack over Corn Flakes.
Anyways, this morning, I popped in my headphones and, though I can’t remember who linked me to it, stumbled across the latest tracks from the upcoming Dancing With the DJ Single by our friends The Knocks.  “Dancing With The DJ” starts out with a twangy guitar riff that stays throughout the song, even as it’s overwhelmed at times by the vocals and the drumbeat.  Dare I say (I dare, I dare), there’s a bit of an Discovery-era Daft Punk vibe through the whole thing.  An out and out jam, this one.  “Thinking About You” isn’t the club record that its EP-mate is, but is a terrific headphone record.  The falsetto chrous (I assume from JPatt) is The Bravery/Bloc Party-esque, and the beat matches the longing, lonely tone of the lyrics.
Needless to say, today’s going to be a better day than yesterday.
Both tracks are available in exchange for liking The Knocks on Facebook.  The Dancing With The DJ Single is out in November.
