G5 - Your (posted sometimes) EP of Music-Related Links

  1. Dancing Alone to Pony is one of the best Tumblrs I’ve come across.  Apparently, filming oneself dancing alone to “Pony” was something that people have been doing for quite some time, meme or no.  (Another favorite of mine: from what appears to be one of our servicewomen in Afghanistan.)
  2. Shouts to our friends The Knocks for being named to NME’s 20 Hottest Producers photo listicle (they’re photo #6 if the link doesn’t work).  I’m not sure where “NYV” is, nor do B-Roc and JPatt have a song called “Neon Rocks,” but hey, at least they spelled their group name right.
  3. Music toot of the day goes to comedian Rob Delaney: “‘Doo doo doo doodoo doodoo doo doo doo doodoo doodoo…’ - The Colored Girls.”
  4. Kanye West told us what his album is going to be called on Tooter as well: “MY BEAUTIFUL DARK TWISTED FANTASY.”  Meanwhile, New York’s Vulture blog (which does a fantastic job at covering the entertainment world) has “Ten Album Titles Culled From Kanye’s Twitter That Are Better Than My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.”
  5. Kid Cudi goes HARD at Wale in the outtakes of Complex’s cover story for “never really [having] a good energy.”  Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, it’s RAP BEEF IN 2010!

(Bonus track) I try to keep things light and make jokes in this space, but there’s some clown out here on the internet trying to raise $10 million to pay off Weezer to stop making music.  He says, “This is an abusive relationship, and it needs to stop now.”  It’s in all seriousness that I say this: screw this guy and anybody who’s giving him money.  If you gave him money, stop reading and go away.  I know it’s a joke and we’re not supposed to take it seriously, but this just rubs me the wrong way.  The flawed premise of the joke presumes that fans have some sort of ownership over a band and their music, but they don’t.  If you don’t like Weezer’s music, do what the rest of us did: stop listening and buying their stuff.

And that’s leaving aside the use of “abusive relationship.”  October is Domestic Violence Awareness month in the US, and to equate a band making music you don’t like to an abusive relationship is irresponsible, insensitive bullpucky.  (I’m trying to cut down on my cursing, otherwise this would be more colorful.)

(Also, if this whole thing is a hoax to raise money for victims of domestic violence, I reserve the right to retract some of these feelings.  But that seems unlikely, so until otherwise proven, screw this guy.)

[Steps down off soapbox.]
