Group of Five: 1993 Phoenix Suns
This weekend’s Group of Five has been expanded to a group of eight, because the 1993 Suns rotation was awesome. (Aside: many of these may end up to be basketball-themed, so if you don’t like basketball-related jokes, tough.)
“Thunder” Dan Majerle: In tomorrow’s NYT Sunday Magazine, Lynn Hirschberg profiles M.I.A. at great length. It’s an interesting read,...

Kanye West - Power
Yowza. I was among those who took the “808s and Heartbreak was okay but I’m going to wait and see on what’s next.” What was next is now upon us and it is a doozy. The first leak from Kanye West’s upcoming Good Ass Job, titled “Power,” has arrived. I’ve only listened a handful of times, but this chanting, hand-clap heavy track is the best we’ve heard from Kanye since Graduation. Here’s to...

Witch House?
I know I already posted some stray thoughts on Lissie earlier today, so here are some “passing notions” on the so-called genre Witch House:
I like inaccessible music. Not all, but some. Actually, some of it is rubbish. I don’t like noise just to listen to noise. Of course, not all Witch House is inaccessible. (“Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict...

A-Trak's Dirty South Dance 2
A-Trak is a busy man, but his latest is not to be missed. Dirty South Dance 2 is available now for free over at Bandcamp for all your dance party needs. DSD2 is what it sounds like: (mostly) Southern rap music remixed with dancebeats. The tracks mix into one another like a mixtape and it breezes by as a result. Shepard Fairey and Obey were sort of involved; officially, they released DSD2 and...

(Today’s Group of Five theme: the 1990-91 Run-TMC Golden State Warriors)
Chris Mullin: Diplo is a man of many talents and with his record label, Mad Decent, and the help of Leandro HBL, he is releasing a documentary on Brazil’s baile-funk Favela on Blast. I know Pitchfork will be streaming the film sometime this summer/winter (northern/southern hemispheres respectively) and...

Another Black Key’s video in support of Brothers. “Tighten up” finds the duo battling it out for the love of a pretty lady in this hilarious clip.

The Group of Five
I started out calling our link dump the Culture Club, then shortened it to CC when I stopped including non-music links. Now I’m changing it to the Group of Five, mainly because I can handle finding five interesting music links everyday… no more of these 20 link long lists like last fall. Today’s links are named for the OG Group of Five, the G5, though that will change from...

Really just trying to post this before Sam does, but here is the new video for Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes somewhat crossover single “Home”. I go back and forth on ESTMZ, but it is pretty hard to deny this song.

If you’re not up on Mayer Hawthorne, you should be. His latest video, for “One Track Mind,” just entered the rotation over at MTV. Strangely, it’s been on the director’s Vimeo page for three months now. Nevertheless, a fun video for a terrific song.

If posting Yours Truly’s fantastic videos is cool, consider me Miles Davis. The YT camera turns this time to Toro Y Moi’s visit to San Francisco studio Different Fur, where Chaz Bundick recorded this recreation of chillwave jam “You Hid” off of his full length debut Causers of This. The storyline around this video has been about how Chaz laid down all the parts - vocals,...

A new video for “Ghetto” off Gibbs latest mix-tape Str8 Killa No Filla. Pretty straightforward visuals, but yet another example of Freddie Gibbs killing it. I think it is about time for him to have a proper release.

Good Tuesday afternoon, folks. Computer problems precluded me from posting this yesterday; this little video is CotP’s first venture into that world. We’re looking into doing some stuff with different types of media - more videos, a podcast, live radio, perhaps live shows, etc. - and we’ll let you know about all of that as things comes down the pike.
Hope you enjoy the video,...

To Have and To Hold is an upcoming “musicmentary” on vinyl culture, featuring interviews with Chuck D, ?uestlove and Bruce Ludvall of Bluenote Records. From the trailer, it seems the film hasn’t quite finished up on production, so no release date as of yet.

Above is the freaky cool video for Gayngs cover of Godley & Creme’s “Cry”. (G&C used to be part of 10CC before splitting off. Yeah I know how to Wikipedia). I have been pretty obsessed with all things Gayngs related these days. It is some funky brand of down-tempo R&B tinged pop. I believe my co-conspirator Sam would file this under “baby-making music”....

Pink Ganther, Fred Falke and Remixing
As I’ve discussed in this space in the past, remixing is a subtle art. Any schmuck with GarageBand can find an instrumental track and a vocal track, match tempo and end up at the top of the HypeMachine popularity charts. Somehow the novelty of some of these projects persists — I’m certainly guilty for perpetuating their popularity of some of them — but mashing tracks up...

10,000 Volt Ghost
There’s a lot to like about 10,000 Volt Ghost a new producer or group out of San Francisco. Let’s enumerate some of them:
They/(s)he is/are named for the villainous 10,000 Volt Ghost (pictured above) from Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed.
Googling this artist led me to discover the existence of Scoobypedia. I dare anyone born before 1990 to not spend five minutes on that site. ...

I always liked Bloc Party’s brand of dance-pop. The band knows their limits and, for the most part, sticks to them. Some tracks from Silent Alarm and A Weekend in the City are full-on electro bangers, and the only thing keeping the songs and the band from being catergorized as such are Kele Okereke’s vocals.
Okereke is set to release his solo debut, The Boxer, under his first name. ...
