Culture Club, August 31, 2009 - RIP AM
First up, a moment of silence for DJ AM, who passed away this weekend at the age of 36. AM was, by all accounts, a fantastic person and a terrific DJ and he will be sorely missed. DJ Skeet Skeet, A-Trak and Justin Warfield of She Wants Revenge all posted wonderful, heartfelt tributes to AM over the weekend. The rest of the links after the jump… -Here’s an interesting piece on the...

Culture Club, 8.28.09
I’m loving Benny Blanco’s Michael Jackson remix. Anybody seen the audio around the internets? Here’s the link dump…trying to see if I can manage doing this daily. News of the Day -CONFIRMED: L.A. Coroner rules Michael Jackson’s death a homicide The Rest -I guess Noel Gallagher quit Oasis? -Beck doesn’t believe in permalinks, but nevertheless, he’s got...

Culture Club, 27.8.09
(photo courtesy of Jacob Bluestone) It’s been a long while since any Culture Club posts, but they might start coming faster and furious-er than before. I’m toying with the idea of making this a daily post, so we’ll see how it goes. -Drake has a new track with Kanye West, Lil’ Wayne and Eminem; “Forever” is slated to be featured in the upcoming LeBron James...

The XX, 2.0
Sam posted a video for The XX’s, “Crystalised”, in passing a few weeks back. It didn’t really move me at the time, but I recently picked up a copy of their self-titled debut (alternatively called 2.0) on a whim last week. Among others, the London foursome list Mariah Carey, Rihanna, the Cure, and Chromatics as their influences so its hard to tell exactly where they are...

Late to the Party: Dirty Projectors, Still Going...
I find the colloquialism “late to the party” quite interesting. Considering it’s usage, most would argue that it has a negative connotation, no? And yet, everyone, from my mother to the alt bro who snickers at me for my unironic wearing of corduroys, strives to arrive “fashionable late” to most of the events they attend. Moreover, another cliche states that...

Fool's Gold
A few weeks ago I wrote about my current obsession with afro-pop inspired music being made in America. In addition to that Highlife song that I crowned my early 2009 favorite, the other afro-leaning group that has been on repeat around here is Fool’s Gold. The LA group features members of Glasser, Foreign Born and a few other staples of the West Coast scene. According to Itunes I have...

YACHT
Over the last few weeks, I have started to detest comparisons. We encounter them in all sorts of media: -“Is Bobby Jindal the conservative Barack Obama?” (No.) -“Neutrogena brings all the scrub of St. Ives with the smoothness of Dove.” (Okay, so I made that one up…) -“LeBron James is Magic Johnson with a bit of Michael Jordan for good measure in Karl Malone’s body.” (That’s a real quote.)...

All Is Love
If you are white and under the age of 30 you have probably been paying pretty close attention to all the details surrounding the upcoming film adaptation of “Where the Wild Things Are”. The Spike Jonze directed film will be soundtracked by none other than Yeah Yeah Yeahs heroine, Karen O. The first single, “All Is Love” will be released tomorrow, but you can stream it now...

The Cellar Door: The Bird and the Bee
Welcome to the latest installment of a quasi-regular series, the Cellar Door, where we go back and take a look at something we missed when it first hit the scene. When it comes to music, my girlfriend, Laura, and I have a sometimes-tenuous relationship. She grew up on certain genres that I, uh, don’t like and I grew up on good music. I often make fun of how she likes to listen to the music of...

Lefse Compilation
After posting about Alan Palomo’s gear getting jacked in Sacramento yesterday, the dudes from Lefse contacted us to say thanks for the support. Lefse is a great label out of Sacramento that is home to a number of cool artists including Palomo’s, Neon Indian. Considering the nice communication I had with them, I figured now would be a great time to rep their recent compilation....

Attention Sacramento
Vega/Neon Indian frontman, Alan Palomo is reporting that all of his touring gear was stolen from his hotel in Sacramento last night. If anyone is in the Sacramento area Alan has provided a list of the stolen gear for people to keep an eye out for. I can’t say I am very optimistic about anything turning up, but if you want more great music like this I suggest the citizens of Sacramento get on...

D.C. I love You, But You Are Bringing Me Down
My recent travels around the country took me to the wonderful city of San Francisco. I had never been before and immediately fell in love with the place. Maybe its just the unbearable humidity or high intensity environment I left behind in D.C. but the beautiful weather and laid back vibe really seduced me. SF is somewhere near the top of my ever growing “places id like to live” list....

Apology to Pollinateurs
I snagged this track a while back from GVB and it has been growing on me ever since. At the time, they described the song as “formless” which seems pretty damn spot on to me. I almost always have to stop what I am doing when I listen to the song, it sort of seeps into your brain. That squealing sax part at 2:20 nearly cuts me in half every time when its up real loud. mp3:Karl Blau -...

¡Yerpa ChurrChurr Huevón!
Dijon is right…we’ve been blowing it big time, but it’s not without cause. D was on vacation for two weeks. He claims to have been “working” while in New Mexico; I have my doubts, but nevertheless, it’s difficult to say to your co-vacationers while getting ready to hike or head to the beach, “Just give me 15 minutes to bang out a blog post for which...

Sun Hands
Oh man, we have been blowing it lately. I have been on various travels over the past few weeks, but am finally back in the district, where it is hot and altogether depressing. Turns out vacation is way more fun than work… On a lighter note, during my trip I was turned on to the Local Natives, a great band with a really cool kaleidoscope, melting rainbow sort of aesthetic going on. I can not...

All Points West Recap
(Quick preface: I hate talking about the weather. Unless it’s to point out an Obama-shaped cloud, a sunset or a looming natural disaster, when a conversation turns to the weather, it’s generally time to bail. So it comes with great sadness when I say that my All Points West recap has to include a discussion of the weather. Sorry for the delay on this post…it’s taken me more than a week to dry...
