[Tracks] Yeasayer - Ambling Alp
News of Yeasayer’s long awaited sophomore LP, Odd Blood, has been bouncing around the internet for a few days now. “Ambling Alp” offers us our first taste of the album. I definitely recall this track from their performance at the P4K festival, but can’t seem to remember if this was the one they hailed as the “summer jam of 2010”. It certainly has that...

(Let the record show that we don’t actually speak the way we write emails here at CotP.) Mark Ronson, Sam Sparro and Theophilus London have recorded “Soles of Fire,” as Chauffeur perhaps to accompany the release of Mark Ronson’s Gucci shoe. It’s an interesting jam. Here’s to hoping for more collaborations between the three. (via FADER) mp3: Chauffeur - Soles...

[Video + Tracks] Ellie Goulding - Under The Sheets
Some of my musical tastes are overwhelmingly predictable. I like to think my musical tastes are developing as I get older, but there has been and will always be a rightful place in my heart (and playlists) for foreign ladies singing pop music. As Heavy D and I hashed out the CotP Top 20 of the aughts (coming in November), he threatened me with bodily harm before I could even bring up Lily...

[Tracks] "John Forté, grab the mic roots sway it...
John Forté first hit the scene in the mid-90s as part of The Fugees crew, working with the group on a few tracks from The Score. After the group disbanded, Forté was closely aligned with Wyclef Jean and Pras, appearing on two tracks on Jean’s The Carnival. He was groomed as the next of the crew to hit it big, but his 1998 solo debut Poly Sci, while playing to solid reviews, didn’t...

[Tracks] Recent Remixes
A-Trak is my favorite disc jockey. Technically, he’s fantastic on the ones and twos both scratching and beatmatching; he is a true joy to watch perform. Yet, technical spinning and producing are two very different, if related, skills. And while A-Trak has been among the elite on the decks for more than a decade, his production aesthetic is still developing. Don’t get me wrong,...

[Tracks] "Do the mashed potatoe..."
I enjoy putting on Girl Talk and just letting it ride. The DJs and producers that put mash-ups together clearly have talent and know how to, if nothing else, match beats flawlessly. And I do buy that old art can be re-appropriated to create new art and that “fair use” is a legitimate legal concept. The novelties of mash-ups are not lost on me; they can easily feel too cute for...

“Mowgli’s Road” from Marina and the Diamonds -Slate’s Jonah Weiner defends Creed as underrated…given that the band is widely reviled, reviled enough that without knowing their music, one might expect a monkey banging on trash cans, I accept that they’re underrated; the question is to what degree. My best estimate is that Creed is underrated the same way that...

[Video + Tracks] Freddie Gibbs
Freddie Gibbs has put out two high caliber mix-tapes already this year. For a kid who use to listen almost entirely to rap, it takes an impressive performance to get me interested these days. Gibbs has a rawness that seems comical for a white kid from New England to write about, but trust me, it’s there. If you have Google skills I encourage you to track down his mixtapes, The Miseducation...

[Tracks] The Polyphonic Spree - Blurry
The Polyphonic Spree have always been on that list of bands I need to check out, but have never gotten around to. In high school a lot of the same kids that were pushing Phish and Widespread Panic were big Polyphonic Spree fans so I sort of wrote them off from the get go. However, I finally came around a couple weeks back when GorillavsBear shared a new demo for the song Blurry. This stripped...

[Words] Bill Withers
I’ve had Bill Wither’s music stuck in my head for days now. Upon starting my new job and thus, my new commute, I made myself promise to, uh, myself that every morning and evening, I’d scour my iPod for stuff that I haven’t given its due. Over the years, as a music appreciator, I have acquired loads of music that I’ve intended to listen to and simply haven’t...

The taste of salt, the rough of sand and the smell of wood smoke still cling to my senses after one last beach weekend. Chromeo hasn’t been the subject of any coverage here at CotP, but both the Heavy One and myself are tremendous fans. [Links] Stereomood and Musical Rooms
Two links I’ve enjoyed cruising around lately: 1. Stereomood is a site that allows you to select your mood and listen to pre-determined playlists based on that mood. You can also submit your playlist and attach a mood to it for others to enjoy. It doesn’t work perfectly; someone else’s idea of “Dreamy” might not agree with your’s and there isn’t an...

[Tracks] Woods (Daytrotter Session)
Woods build on the success of Songs of Shame with 3 new unreleased tracks unveiled in today’s Daytrotter session. In that time Dayve Hawk has worked to perfect his brand of nostalgic, hazy pop and Seek Magic is the culmination of those efforts. The...
